  1. What is the purpose of an interview? The purpose of the interview is to land the job. Breaking that down a bit, it’s the opportunity for the employer to meet you and ask questions to determine if you are a fit for the company/organization. And, the opportunity for you, the job candidate, to ask questions to determine if the company/organization is a fit for you.
  2. What is an informational interview? A scheduled meeting with someone working in the job/career field of interest to you. You are interviewing them asking information about their job. It differs from a real interview because it’s not about hiring; it’s strictly about gaining information.
  3. Are there different types of interviews? Yes, there are several types of interviews, and depending on the job and industry will determine what type you encounter. The most common are:
    1. Structured – Formal and usually includes several interviewers. It opens with an ice-breaker to ease you into the interview process, followed by information about the company and the job, and questions about your experience and education as it relates to the job.
    2. Unstructured – Less formal and more conversational. The interviewer wants to hear from you, so they typically ask open-ended questions in a more relaxed manner than structured interviews.
    3. Behavioral – One of the most common types of interviews. The belief is past performance/behavior determines future performance/behavior. They are listening for examples, actions, and results by asking questions such as, “Tell me about a time when you…”, Describe a situation when you were faced with…”.
    4. Stress – Questions are asked to see how you react in a stressful situation. Some questions may appear to be odd such as “how much does a 777 airliner weigh?” Answering is about breaking down the question and offering a step by step response on how you would determine the answer.
    5. Panel – One job candidate is interviewed by a panel of employees who are part of the decision makers in the hiring process. Panel interviews vary in style, but are usually more formal than not.
  4. What is an elevator pitch? Your elevator pitch is your personal introduction that speaks about your professional experience and what you can do for the company/organization you are interviewing with.
  5.  What are mistakes job candidates make in interviews? Not researching the company/organization and being aware of their mission, products, services and local/global reputation. Having a negative attitude. Acting immature and unprofessional. Not prepared for questions that are asked or responding too long and rambling. Not having a list of questions to ask. Not following up afterward with a thank you.
